connecting people through nature & shared adventures

how it all began

Solemates was founded by Northern Beaches psychotherapist Peta Kelly, with a mission to offer warm, inclusive hiking adventures across Sydney and beyond. Our hikes bring together like-minded people who value health, fitness, and meaningful social connections, creating a space for lasting friendships while exploring Australia’s breathtaking landscapes.

Currently, we offer two hikes each week on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and we’re thrilled to announce a third hike will be added to our calendar on Sundays starting in 2025. Join us for adventures that nurture both body and soul!

As Solemates continues to grow in popularity, some exciting initiatives are on the horizon. In November 2025, we’re off on our first international hiking tour to New Zealand, offering members the chance to explore breathtaking new terrains.

Additionally, we’ll host our inaugural HopeTrek on International Women’s Day, Sunday 8 March 2026. This special event aims to raise awareness and funds for women fleeing domestic violence, combining our love for hiking with a mission to make a positive impact.

Milestones & Future Plans

At Solemates, responsible hiking is at the heart of everything we do. We prioritise sustainable and ethical practices to respect the environment, local communities, and cultural heritage. By working together with members, suppliers, and traditional landowners, we aim to minimise our footprint while becoming one of Australia’s most conscientious hiking groups.

Responsible Hiking

  • Educating members on cultural and ecological values.

  • Creating meaningful hiking experiences that inspire connection and care.

  • Supporting local businesses and communities through partnerships.

  • Upholding a strict leave-no-trace policy to protect natural spaces.

  • Honouring the knowledge and connection of traditional owners through consultation and recognition.
Protecting the natural environment is at the heart of Solemates’ mission. We are committed to preserving the beauty of the landscapes we explore through:

Our Environmental Policy

  • Strict compliance with environmental laws and permits.

  • Identifying and reducing risks to ecosystems.

  • Supporting conservation efforts alongside Parks and Wildlife Services.

  • Using our hikes to inspire awareness about environmental sustainability.

  • Minimising greenhouse gas emissions and adopting climate-resilient practices.

We use the Australian Walking Track Grading System (AWTGS) to rate walks and hikes. Most of our hikes are graded 1–3 for accessibility. Below is a brief guide:

AWTGS Grading System

  • Grade 1: Suitable for people with limited mobility. No walking or hiking experience required as tracks are paved and or have a flat even surface with no steps or steep sections. Walks and hikes are generally less than 5km.

  • Grade 2: Appropriate for seniors, families, and youngsters. No walking or hiking experience required as tracks have a harder compacted surface. Expect some hills and occasional steps. Walks and hikes generally less than 10km.

  • Grade 3: Suitable for most ages and fitness levels. Walking and hiking experience is recommended as tracks may have short steep hill sections, rough surfaces and natural and rocky steps. Hikes generally less than 20km.

  • Grade 4: Suitable for experienced walkers and hikers as navigation and technical skills might be required. Tracks will be long, rough and steep with limited signage or navigation aids. Rock scrambling and water crossings may be required. Hikes generally less than 25km.

  • Grade 5: Suitable for highly experienced self-reliant hikers with specialised skills, including map and compass navigation and emergency first aid. Tracks might be unmarked, long, very rough and very steep. Rock scrambling and water crossings may be required. Hikes generally greater than 25km.
